Postgraduate students

Billy McNeice is undertaking a PhD at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University, with primary supervision from myself, and co-supervision from Prof Matthias Boer, Prof Brendan Choat, and Dr Anne Griebel. Billy’s PhD research is examining environmental conditions and plant hydraulic traits affect forest flammability.

Simin Rahmani is undertaking a PhD at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University, with primary supervision from myself, and co-supervision from Prof Matthias Boer, Prof Brendan Choat, and A/Prof Owen Price at the Centre for Environmental Risk Management of Bushfires, at the University of Wollongong. Simin’s PhD research is examining the compound effects of severe droughts and bushfires on Australia’s temperate eucalypt forests.

Harriet Simpson-Southward is completing her PhD with the Centre for Environmental Risk Management of Bushfires, at the University of Wollongong, under supervision from Dr Hamish Clarke and several other co-supervisors. Harriet’s research is examining spatial variation in bark traits, in the context of understanding climate change effects on the resilience of fire-prone eucalypt communities.

Kathryn Fuller in undertaking her PhD at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University, and her primary supervisor is Prof Matthias Boer, with co-supervision from me. Kate is undertaking research with the NSW Bushfire Risk Management Research Hub, and will be developing models of fuel properties.

Shiva Khanal is currently undertaking a PhD on quantification of national forest cover and carbon stocks in support of the REDD+ Programme in Nepal. Shiva is based at the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at Western Sydney University, and his primary supervisor is Prof Matthias Boer, with co-supervision from Prof Belinda Medlyn and myself.

Dr Tonantzin Tarin completed her PhD at the University of Technology Sydney, with her primary supervisor Prof Derek Eamus, with co-supervision from myself. Tonantzin’s PhD investigated water use efficiency at a range of temporal and spatial scales, ranging from leaf-level to entire ecosystem measurements. Tonantzin is currently based at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Undergraduate students

Ben Foster was a student at Western Sydney University. Ben joined us for a Summer internship (2018/2019) where he researched the role of plant physiology in controlling fuel moisture content dynamics. Ben continued this research for another year, as part of his undergraduate studies.
